Basics of Vedic Jyotish
The Zodiac's 360 degrees are equally divided in 27 nakshatras (constellations) and 12 rashis (signs) . Nine celestial bodies consisting of one star, one satellite, five planets and two hypothetical poles of universe have been found to be effective are called Grahas- Surya (Sun), Chandra (Moon), Mangal (Mars), Budh (Mercury), Guru (Jupiter), Shukra (Venus), Shani (Saturn), Rahu (Dragon's head) and Ketu (Dragon's tail).
Surya is considered Atma (Soul), Chandra is Mann (Mind), Mangal is Rakta (Blood), Budh is Buddhi (Brain), Guru is Gyan (Knowledge), Shukra is Kaam (Desire), Shani is Dukh (Sadness), Rahu is Paap (Un- righteous deeds) and Ketu is Moksha (Eternal bliss) of Kaal Purush ( Time personified) by means of which we perceive the Universe.
There are 12 signs in Vedic astrology - Mesh (Aries- The Ram), Vrish (Taurus- The Bull), Mithun (Gemini- The Twins), Karka (Cancer- The Crab), Simha (Leo- The Lion), Kanya (Virgo- The Virgin), Tula (Libra- The Scales), Vrishchik (Scorpio- The scorpion), Dhanu (Sagittarius- The Archer), Makar(Capricorn- The Goat), Kumbha (Aquarius- The Water-carrier) and Meen (Pisces- The Fish).
Surya owns Simha, Chandra- Karka, Mangal- Mesh and Vrishchik, Budh- Mithun and Kanya, Guru- Dhanu and Meen, Sukra- Vrish and Tula, Shani- Makar and Kumbha. Rahu and Ketu didn't own any rashi but have some effect on Vrish, Mithun, Kanya (Rahu) and Vrishchik, Dhanu, Meen (Ketu).
27 nakshatras are divided in 3 groups each having owner grahas as Ketu, Shukra, Surya, Chandra, Mangal, Rahu, Guru, Shani and Budh repeated for each group.
Each Nakshatra has four Padas (parts).
Names of Nakshatras are :- Ashwini, Bharani, Kritika, Rohini, Mrigshira, Ardra, Punarvasu, Pushya, Ashlesha, Magha, Purva- Phalguni, Uttara- Phalguni, Hasta, Chitra, Swati, Vishakha, Anuradha, Jyeshtha, Mool, Purva-Ashadhha, Uttara-Ashadhha, Shravana, Dhanishthha, Shatbhisha, Purva- Bhardapad, Uttara- Bhasrapad, Revati.
A 28th Nakshatra named Abhijit is also incorporated which consists of almost more than a half part of Uttara-Ashadhha and 1/15 part of Shravana; it does not have 4 parts as other nakshatras and considered most auspicious.
